The family summer home in rural Quebec, without electricity and several modern conveniences, harks back to earlier times and reminded Pitirim Sorokin of his life in Komi. It remains largely unchanged today and is visited every year by members of the family and friends.
Photos of selected sites, apartments, and schools in Russia where Pitirim lived and studied in the period from 1889 to 1922.
Various photos from Komi and Winchester reflecting Pitirim's 121st birthday in his motherland and at his American home. January-February 2010.
Observance includes the preparation of a proper Russian Easter dinner, including "Tsarskaya Paskha" and "Kulich" made from scratch according to recipes in Elena Molokhovets's famous cookbook, "A Gift to Young Housewives." In 2010 Easter was in early April, and by then the first flowers had appeared in the garden.
The famous hillside garden encircling the family home in Winchester. It was originally planted by Pitirim Sorokin in the early 1930s and now is tended by Sergei Sorokin and Richard Hoyt, Jr. At an earlier time azaleas predominated, but with passing years the rhododendrons increased in prominence, and a great many different kinds of dwarf evergreens were added.
Photos collected by Sergei Sorokin to illustrate various books, articles, and documentaries, as well as to provide for publications appearing in Russia following his first visit in 1999.
